Every woodworker and furniture factory owner in Lagos, Abuja, or Onitsha knows the pain of completing a massive wardrobe or kitchen cabinet project, only for the customer to call back because the edging tape is peeling off. When the tape does not stick firmly to your MDF or HDF boards, it ruins the beauty of your hard work, damages your brand reputation, and forces you to waste expensive materials. If you are constantly battling loose edging tape, the causes usually come down to how you set up the machine and how you prepare your materials before production begins.
The most common reason for peeling tape is that the hot melt glue has not reached its correct operating temperature inside the glue pot. The heat needs to go both ways: if the glue is too cold, it stays thick and the machine cannot spread it evenly across the board edge, so the tape pulls off after a few days; if it is overheated, the glue burns and loses its bond strength, which gives the same peeling result. Both problems point back to temperature control, and in Nigeria that often involves the power supply — constant grid cuts and generator fluctuations can make the screen show a high reading while the glue in the pot stays cold and thick. A heavy-duty servo stabilizer is one way to keep the voltage steady so the heating elements do their job, but it is not the only answer; a misread thermocouple or a glue pot that has not soaked through yet produces the same symptom. Whatever the cause, a reliable habit is to wait at least twenty minutes after the screen reaches the target temperature before feeding the first board, so the core of the glue pot has time to liquefy fully.
Another major enemy of a clean finish is the layer of sawdust that settles on boards after they come off the panel saw. When workers push dusty boards straight into the machine, the dust sits between the hot glue and the wood grain, so the adhesive cannot bite into the board — the pressure rollers press the tape down, but it sticks to the loose dust instead of the board. You can fix this without buying expensive cleaning equipment: have operators wipe each board edge with a clean, dry microfibre cloth right before feeding. Also keep the tracking rails and the area around the machine clear of heavy sawdust buildup, so nothing contaminates the glue line during sealing.
If the glue temperature is right and the boards are clean, but the tape still peels at the corners, the pressure rollers need attention. The rubber or steel rollers force the hot glue into the pores of both the board and the PVC tape, and over months of heavy use they can vibrate loose or drift out of alignment, leaving weak spots along the edge. Check the pressure gauges on the machine and add a little mechanical tension — but go in small steps. The aim is to squeeze the tape and board together firmly, not as hard as possible: over-tightening crushes the board edge and leaves marks that are just as bad as a weak bond. Adjust, run a test strip, and look at the board edge each time until the tape sits flat. Also check that the knives cut the tape cleanly without dragging or pulling on the freshly glued edge — a clean trim is what stops the tape lifting at the ends and keeps that export-grade finish.
